Michigan Car Accidents - Car Safety For Infants January 6, 2010
Children are the stars of every family and their welfare is the prime concern for all parents. Yet, going by American statistics, the situation is more than grim, when it concerns child safety. Unbelievable but true - in 2007, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention six million children between the ages of 0 and 14, suffered unintentional injuries that required admission in an emergency room.
The injuries that we talk about here are not necessarily uncomplicated situations like a sprained ankle or a bruised knee. Growing children are usually restless and always trying out new things which make them prone to specific injuries. The current situation means that there are 12 injuries taking place every minute and unintentional injuries are considered to be the number one cause of death in children of the age group 0-14.
But with knowledge and information on the subject, a lot of such unfortunate events can be prevented. Let us talk about what can be done with children who are below one year of age in terms of prevention of motor vehicle occupancy injuries.
Infants at this age are perhaps in the most vulnerable stage of their lives. This makes them fall in the ‘high risk’ category. When traveling with an infant this young, the best option is to secure the child in rear-facing seats. This is because this position supports their head, neck and back and can help in the prevention of spinal injuries.
The second risk factor affecting infants who are under 1 is how they are placed within the child restraint. It is important to remember that infants this young, do not have the right muscle control ability to prevent their necks from drooping dangerously forward or slouching if they are seated in an upright position.
As parents it is our responsibility to keep the infants safe, as even some of the non-fatal vehicle injuries can result in lifelong body impairment causing mental pain and distress for the entire family.

Preventing spinal injuries in children this age should be the main focus of each parent. In Tennessee we have state funded centers at which a parent can drop in and have a safety expert check the type, position and security of your child safety seats.
