Michigan Child Injury Lawyer Reminds Parents About School Bus Safety During National School Bus Week October 19, 2011
Our Michigan child injury lawyers would like to notify our client that this week is National School Bus Week. Every year the National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT) sponsors National School Bus Week during the third full week in October. The purpose of the week is to remind drivers of three important rules of the road:
- 1. Be prepared to stop when a school bus’s lights are flashing yellow
- 2. Always stop when a school bus’s lights are flashing red
- 3. Proceed with caution when a bus’s hazard lights are flashing
New laws enacted in July, make penalties harsher for drivers who fail to use caution in school bus safety zones. Fines are now doubled for moving violations occurring in a school bus safety zone and make it a misdemeanor for injuring and a felony for killing a child entering or exiting a bus.
Michigan school bus accidents can cause serious injuries to the bus driver, its passengers, and all others involved in the accident. In fact, according to Michigan Traffic Crash Facts, Michigan school busses were involved in 882 accidents that produced 273 injuries in 2010. Many of those injured were drivers and passengers in cars involved with busses. Two people died in these Michigan school bus related accidents.
During National School Bus Week, our Michigan child injury lawyers would like to advise parents to remind children about safety while waiting for the bus and when walking to and from school.
